The Underworld
1. What about Ancient Greek culture & values is reflected in their beliefs towards the Underworld?
Ancient Greeks belief of the Underworld was very important, it was where souls went to rest for all of eternity. They believed that it was separated into 5 different sections, and that different beings would guide them throughout the Underworld. The Underworld reflects the Ancient Greeks belief of life after death.
2. Do you recognize any similarities between the Greek's belief of death and the Underworld and those which are held within your own religion?
Yes, there are some similarities between the Greek's belief of death and the Underworld and the beliefs held in the religion that I practice (I go to a Roman Catholic Church). In the Catholic religion, we believe that after death, a soul can go to Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory. This is similar to the belief of the Greeks because, they believe that the Underworld is separated into different sections. In both belief systems, your deeds on earth determine where your soul goes.
3. The journey of the soul is described to be an elaborate process, why do you think that is? Why cant it be more simple?
I think the journey of the soul is described as such an elaborate process because, the soul is going to a different realm/ an unknown place. The journey is also described to be very elaborate because, it is the process of determining the final resting place of mortals souls. It cant be more simple because, it is a serious and very important process that a soul must go through.
4. Looking back (to The Epic of Gilgamesh) this will be the 2nd text in which the protagonist journey to the underworld to confront death, why do you the hero "needs" to visit the underworld?
I think the hero needs to visit the Underworld because, it shows them that they cannot give up. Hero's usually visit the underworld at the point in the story when they begin to lose hope. Visiting the Underworld shows them that they are not yet ready to die or for their soul to rest. It lets them know that they still have work to do and gives them the strength to keep going.
